The Word Nerd

aka Wordie

(like a Foodie but with words)

Hi there! I'm Kristi, behind the pen at Copywriter+.

Kristi Kenyon Copywriter Plus

My Story:

I grew up surrounded and raised by blue collar workers in a farming community right here in Iowa.
I know that's where I've learned what hard work really looks like and what you can accomplish with that sort of grit. I lived in a small town raised in part by a county engineer. I've worked a lot of odd jobs since I was 9 (<< and no, that's not a typo), including:
  • janitorial worker
  • retail worker
  • food service worker
  • hotel staff
  • childcare
  • warehouse office manager
I know that consumer service businesses are the most needed and used but usually the last to be properly recognized. They're not always known for quality customer service and definitely not for personalized marketing. I want to change that by helping these types of businesses around Des Moines go above what most people would expect and create a real trust and excitement for the amazing services they provide. That's what fuels Copywriter+ and keeps it in Des Moines.
A few fun facts that helped me become a copywriter:
  • My love of words started with spelling tests in 2nd grade.
  • My first published work was a poem in 3rd grade.
  • My junior high English teacher taught me a love of words with every new vocabulary lesson. (FUN FACT: her name was also Kristi!)
  • I loved writing papers and was an unpaid (except maybe french fries) "freelance editor" to my friends in high school.
  • My first marketing piece was a poster for my FCCLA club.

Unlike copywriters who call themselves wordsmiths, I prefer Word Nerd.
How did I find copywriting? A career assessment test. (It also said I should be a judge. No regrets.)

I'm kind of stubborn (thanks mom) so I learned all I could about copywriting and when I found out I could really make a career out of writing, I was laser focused on it. I wanted nothing more than to be a copywriter.

I went to Drake University where I received a Bachelors's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. #GoBulldogs

My Creds:

  • Graduated from Drake University with a BA in Journalism and Mass Communication, Creative Advertising Track
  • Radio industry promotions for 2 years
  • In-house marketing department of one for 2 companies over the span of almost 3 years
  • Industries worked for include (but not limited to)
    • construction companies
    • specialty lawn care companies
    • car shipping companies
    • interior designers
    • specialty repair companies
  • Email Open Rate average of 32% with Click Thru Rate (CTR) average of 1.9%
  • Increase foot & website traffic by 25%
